Willi Hertlein was born in Nuremberg in 1908 and died there in 1968. He studied under Emil Orlik at the United State Schools for Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin and undertook study trips to Paris and Italy; Nuremberg remained his main place of residence and work. His early work in the 1930s was close to New Objectivity, and after the war his compositions became increasingly abstract, recognizably influenced by the Bauhaus and by Lyonel Feininger. He received public commissions, including for the interiors of the Nuremberg Post Office and rooms in the Main Customs Office in Fürth. Gouache and watercolor were among his frequently used techniques.
In the collection: "The Ice Skater."
Technique: Gouache.
