Sam Francis was born in San Mateo, California, in 1923 and died in Santa Monica in 1994. He belongs to the second generation of Abstract Expressionism; his work combines Color Field painting, European Art Informel, and influences from East Asian art, with pure colors meeting unpainted surfaces. From the 1970s onwards, he increasingly turned to printmaking, working in lithography, monotype, and etching.
In the collection: "Splashing Colors Abstract."
