Rolf Krause studied at the Dresden Art Academy from 1926 to 1933 under Max Feldbauer and Ludwig von Hofmann; his studio was destroyed during the bombing of Dresden. In 1947, he was among the co-founders of the artists' group Das Ufer. Starting with black-and-white woodcuts depicting paths, streets, and railway lines, he expanded his oeuvre to include color woodcuts, pastels, and paintings with landscape and industrial motifs. From 1955 to 1962, he taught at the Workers' and Farmers' Faculty, and from 1965 to 1968, at the Dresden University of Fine Arts.
