Rolf Hans was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1938 and died in Basel in 1996. He was a self-taught painter and a student of Heinz Kreutz from 1961 to 1963; he also worked as a jazz musician in the Barrelhouse Jazzband and as a photographer. His painterly work is divided into series, from the "Fleckenbilder" (spot paintings) (1961–1965) to stripe, box, corner, and surface paintings, to monochromatic paintings (1976–1990); from 1971 he created objects, and from 1990 paper collages. Watercolor and pastel were among his preferred techniques; he was reserved towards the art market and rarely exhibited.
