Reinhard Hess was born in Trier in 1904 and died in Wittlich in 1998. After an apprenticeship in his father's business, he attended the Trier School of Arts and Crafts with Hans Proppe and August Trümper; a study trip to Italy in 1928 brought him into contact with Pittura Metafisica and the works of Giorgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi. From 1948, he designed stained glass windows for over forty churches in the Diocese of Trier and also created more than 800 oil paintings and watercolors, in which geometric and free compositions are combined with religious symbolism. From 1930 to 1935 and again from 1946 to 1969, he taught at the Trier School of Arts and Crafts; in 1975, he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
