Paul Uwe Dreyer was born in Osnabrück on September 22, 1939, and died in Stuttgart on November 10, 2008. From 1958 to 1961, he studied at the Werkkunstschule Hannover and then at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Berlin; a scholarship took him to Villa Massimo in Rome. His work belongs to geometric-constructive art and, particularly in the picture pairs and sequences from the 1970s onwards, explores principles of order and their variations. From 1974 to 2005, he taught at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, where he served as rector from 1987–1991 and 1998–2004; in 1999, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
