Paul Berger-Bergner (1904 Prague – 1978 Mannheim) became a student of Walther Klemm in Weimar from 1921 onwards and was in contact with teachers and students of the Bauhaus there. He continued his studies with Emil Orlik in Berlin and from 1925 with Robert Sterl at the Dresden Academy, where he became a master student in 1928. In 1932, alongside Otto Dix, Conrad Felixmüller, and Hans Grundig, he was a co-founder of the Dresden Secession; in 1937, his linocut The Hell was confiscated and destroyed as degenerate art. From 1948, he taught painting and graphic arts at the Werkkunstschule Mannheim, taking over its directorship in 1957.
