Niki de Saint Phalle, born Catherine Marie-Agnès Fal de Saint Phalle in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1930, died in San Diego in 2002. She was the only female member of the Nouveaux Réalistes artist group and first became known in the 1960s for her shooting paintings and the walk-in sculpture "Hon" at the Moderna Museet Stockholm. From the mid-1960s onwards, she created the "Nanas", voluminous female figures that brought her international recognition; the city of Hanover acquired three of them in 1974. From 1979, she worked on the "Giardino dei Tarocchi" in Capalbio, Tuscany.
