Jörg Immendorff was born in Bleckede in 1945 and died in Düsseldorf in 2007. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, among others with Joseph Beuys, and worked as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist and action artist; later he taught himself as a professor at the Düsseldorf Academy. He became internationally known with the politically charged painting cycle "Café Deutschland". The bronze "Monkey with Ring" was created in 2006 as an addition to the limited edition of 998 copies of the Bible published by Media Verlag, which he illustrated; the 25-centimeter-high figure reaches for a ring in which the word "God" is stamped.
