James Coignard (1925 Tours – 2008 Mougins) began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nice in 1948 and dedicated himself entirely to painting from 1952. His encounter with the gallery owner Paul Hervieu in Nice gave him contacts with Braque, Matisse, and Chagall. From the late 1960s onwards, he worked intensively with carborundum etching, developed by Henri Goetz, and was involved in the founding of the PASNIC workshop specializing in it. By the time of his death, he had produced around 1,200 original prints.
