Horst Janssen was born in Hamburg in 1929, grew up with his grandparents in Oldenburg, and died in 1995. At the age of sixteen, he began studying at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg and became a master student of Alfred Mahlau. After early colored woodcuts, he turned to drawing and etching in the late 1950s, which he learned from Paul Wunderlich in 1957 and which became his preferred technique; recurring themes include self-portraits, portraits, landscapes, and floral pieces. In 1964, he received the Darmstadt Art Prize, in 1966 the Edwin Scharff Prize of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and in 1968 the first prize for graphic art at the Venice Biennale.
