Hermann Max Pechstein was a German painter and graphic artist of Expressionism. In 1906, he joined the artist group Brücke, as its only academically trained member. After his South Sea journey in 1913/14 and stays in Italy, numerous travel paintings and lithographs were created between 1917 and 1919, including the series "The Italy and South Sea Journey. 50 Original Lithographs" (1919). From 1923 to 1933 and again from 1945, he taught at the Prussian Academy of Arts; in 1937, 326 of his works were confiscated as "degenerate."
