Hans Purrmann was a German painter, graphic artist, art writer, and collector. He studied with Franz von Stuck in Munich and became a student and friend of Henri Matisse in Paris, where he was involved in Matisse's Académie Matisse. His oeuvre includes around 1,400 oil paintings, over 400 watercolors, 1,200 drawings, and numerous prints; still lifes, nudes, portraits, and landscapes bathed in southern light characterize his work. Defamed as "degenerate" during the Nazi era, he emigrated to Florence and later to Switzerland, where he died in Basel in 1966.
