Gernot Kissel studied engineering in Kaiserslautern from 1960 to 1963 and initially worked as an engineer and architect; he taught himself painting. Later, he worked exclusively as an artist and exhibited his work both at home and abroad, including in Belgium, England, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, and Switzerland. His oeuvre includes landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and nudes in a forceful, color-intensive painting style, which is categorized as Expressionism and Neo-Impressionism in critical reception. He lived most recently in the Southern Palatinate.
