Friedensreich Hundertwasser was born as Friedrich Stowasser in Vienna in 1928 and died in 2000. After a brief period of study at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and initial travels to Italy in 1949, he adopted the artist name Hundertwasser. His painterly and graphic work is characterized by spiral forms, strong colors, and the rejection of the straight line; from the 1970s onwards, he also became prominent as an architectural designer and environmental activist. Among his most famous building projects is the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, built between 1983 and 1985.
