Ernst Wilhelm Nay is considered one of the most important painters of German post-war art. His work evolved from figurative and surrealism-influenced beginnings to a completely non-representational style of painting. In the 1950s and 1960s, he created the "Scheibenbilder" (Disc Paintings), in which the circular form became the dominant compositional element. In addition to painting, Nay also worked in printmaking.
