Ernst Tannert was born in Dresden in 1866 and studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1884 to 1894, under Heinrich Lauenstein, Peter Janssen the Elder, and especially in Eugen Dücker's landscape class. In 1894/95, he received a painting scholarship from the Aders-Tönnies Foundation. He exhibited at the Verein der Berliner Künstler and at Eduard Schulte from 1891 onwards and was associated with the Düsseldorf School of Painting. Thematically, he focused on landscapes, often rural scenes on the Lower Rhine; in 1915, he was still living in Düsseldorf, his year of death is not confirmed.
