Emil Schumacher is one of the main representatives of German Informel. After early Cubist-influenced works, he developed a gestural and materially focused abstract painting style from the 1950s onwards, which brought him international recognition; he also created an extensive body of printmaking works. He taught at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg (1958–1960) and the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe (1966–1977) and was represented at Documenta and the Venice Biennale.
