Carl Gunschmann was born in Darmstadt in 1895, where he also died in 1984. After a brief period of study with Adolf Beyer, he moved to Munich in 1912; in 1914, Georg Swarzenski arranged a study visit for him in Paris. His painting oscillates between Expressionism and New Objectivity; after 1920, still lifes and portraits came to the fore, and from 1915 until the late 1920s, he also worked in etching, lithography, and woodcut and linocut. In 1919, he co-founded the Darmstadt Secession with Kasimir Edschmid, and in 1949 he received the Georg Büchner Prize.
