maedchen-auf-schaukel-202414429
Girl on a swing

This striking oil painting features a doll-like girl in a stark white dress, centrally positioned and suspended on a swing against a dramatically simplified background. The turquoise blue sky and dark foreground create a surreal stillness, while distant white buildings emerging from behind dark hills suggest an institutional or dreamlike setting. Her oversized, stylized eyes and rigid posture give the scene an uncanny, theatrical quality, intensified by the symmetrical composition and flat perspective. Her pale, expressionless face appears both innocent and unsettling, and the work plays with strong visual contrasts between playfulness and restraint, surface flatness and emotional depth. Painted during the mid-1960s, Mädchen auf Schaukel reflects Kuniyoshi Kaneko's interest in themes of femininity, eroticism, and the performative self. Active in postwar Japan, Kaneko blended Western classical influences with a subversive sense of theatre, creating images that question identity and control through a stylized and surreal approach. The composition aligns with the 1960s fascination with psychoanalysis, surrealism, and altered perception. The stylized girl on the swing may recall Victorian imagery or Japanese doll traditions, yet her controlled body and emotionless gaze suggest a deeper commentary on confinement, voyeurism, and psychological tension, echoing existential concerns present in both Japanese and European postwar art.

Artist: Kuniyoshi Kaneko

Technique: Oil /Canvas

Edition: Unique

Year: 1965

Dimensions: approx. 45 × 37 cm

\u0001 202414429
